Making a Symbol Dictionary
Symbols
have personal meanings. Some say there are symbols that have the
same meaning almost universally. At DreamWorkers.org, we
believe even those are subject to
being colored by a person's experiences and individual
perceptions. It is that unique interpretation that you bring
to your symbols that is most important. For that reason, you
will want to keep your own symbol dictionary.
To create a symbol dictionary:
- Set aside an alphabetized section at the back of your
dream journal.
- Under the appropriate letter, write down the
important symbol that occurred in your dream.
- Underneath the symbol, list any automatic
associations.
- Make a drawing of the symbol.
- After the drawing, note the title and date of the
dream in which it appeared.
As the
symbol re-occurs in future dreams (as it surely will), simply
add a new entry to that page, including the name, date and
relevant information of the dream. This running list will
provide a way of cross-referencing.
By
making your symbol dictionary, you will be able to see how a
symbols meaning evolves over time.
If you
like, your personal dictionary can include some universal
symbols that you seem to encounter regularly. If you do so,
though, understand that the meanings assigned to these
universal symbols are not foolproof. If you should come across
a universal symbol that seems to hold a different connotation
for you than its "universal" definition, by all means make a
note of that in your personal dictionary.
