Check out this interesting article from the New York Times. It states taht a new theory has occured which states that dreams are a warm-up for the day ahead. I am not sure I buy the theory, but it is plausible that it is all or part of the story.
A Dream Interpretation: Tuneups for the Brain

A new theory suggests that dreams are a warm-up for the day ahead.
I found this little tidbit on topdreaminterpretation.com and found it interesting. Being Christian, this has been a problem for me all along. The Bible has many many instances of dreams and interpretation of dreams, yet bring this up in church and you may be shunned.Â
Here is some of the quote.
Fact is: the Christian religion ignores the dream life of people and the world of dreams in general. And they do this although all prophets legitimated themselves with dreams. With that, religion ignores the inner Spirit. Religion has no vivid inner Spirit. ……
….. What is a religion that ignores dreams and dream interpretation? Such a religion ignores the inner Spirit and therefore this religion is “spiritless”.
Recently I cleaned out my office and came across this article I had forgotten about from our local Long Island newspaper Newsday. The implications to me back up my belief that dreams can help us in many different ways and that “sleeping on it” when trying to remember or solve a problem certainly can’t hurt. Here is the first paragraph with a link to the full article.

ANYONE familiar with the films of Federico Fellini knows that he gave importance to dreams. But the extent of that devotion has become fully evident only now, with the publication of “Il Libro dei Sogni” — “The Book of Dreams.” These sketches, mostly done with variously colored felt-tip pens, are a reminder that Fellini came to Rome in 1939 to study law but instead spent two years as a cartoonist and writer for a satirical fortnightly.
Apparently this doctor has been reading my material. He agrees with everything I have said for 15 years about dreams…
Dreams that have Meaning
by Dr Prem Kumar Sharma
There are too many recorded incidents to dismiss dreams as mere “vestiges of the day” that get projected on the silver screen of the mind at night.
Our own experience also points out the fact that, at times, dreams do try to tell us something vital or important, but we are unable to comprehend them.
In my years of experience in interpreting dreams, I have gained some immense insights into the meanings and workings of dreams. …
…
All dream imagery is symbolic. Each dream symbol is person specific. In other words, what a symbol represents for one person can have an entirely different meaning for another. This is the reason why dream dictionaries generally prove useless. Of course, a common streak runs through all symbols, but they have to be interpreted in the context of the dream content.
Our own experience also points out the fact that, at times, dreams do try to tell us something vital or important, but we are unable to comprehend them.
